Trauma Informed Care Training

70% of adults have experienced trauma

Trauma is the response to deeply distressing or disturbing events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. This can include singular events, such as experiencing a natural disaster, or multiple incidents that lead to complex trauma over time. Trauma informed care is a way of being informed about and sensitive to trauma and being thoughtful in interacting with others in order to avoid retraumatization by creating an environment of safety and understanding.

Trauma affects how people approach and access services. Unknowingly, healthcare providers, facilities, and other service organizations can easily retraumatize those they serve. Learning about and addressing triggers that may cause retraumatization involves organization-wide transformation and culture change. Through this process, “a trauma informed organization realizes the prevalence of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on patients and staff, responds by putting this knowledge into practice, and resists re-traumatization.” (SAMHSA, 2012). Adopting basic practices leads to promoting healing, reversal of the adverse impact of trauma, increased access to care, decreased health care costs, and improved well-being.

Trauma informed care training is available for individuals and teams of all sizes and is ideal for clinical and non-clinical health professionals, policymakers, and anyone interacting with and serving the public. Sessions range from a one-hour basic overview to all-day workshops, all tailored to your needs.

Organizational Transformation

Our trauma informed organizational change approach begins with an evaluation to assess the current state of the organization by looking at culture, climate, policies, procedures, and practices through a trauma informed lens. Self-assessment with input from internal and external stakeholders is a key component of establishing a baseline.

Based on the results of the evaluation process, our consultants serve as partners and facilitators, collaborating with the organization to create a trauma informed organizational plan.

The next step is implementing the plan, followed by creating a sustainability model. This stage involves ongoing evaluation of the trauma informed change process, gathering feedback and data, measuring impact, and continuing to make adjustments as needed. The process is built on evidence-based practices and tailored to meet the needs of the specific organization.
